Re: It was Home I was looking for, and it was Home I found
Thu, July 29, 2004 - 3:54 PMHowdy. I realized the other week that my two favorite movies are Clockwork Orange and Singin' In The Rain. I am starting to wonder what place society has for someone like me.
I know that the song, Singin' In the Rain, was used in Clockwork Orange because it was the only song that Malcolm McDowell knew by heart. What triv do you bring to the table? -

Re: It was Home I was looking for, and it was Home I found
Fri, July 30, 2004 - 11:27 AMOh, good! The language is called Nadsat, and it's based on Russian, German, and some English slang...
Alex's age....Hrm, I remember that his age at the end of the book different, depending on if the edition included the 21st chapter or not, which is when Alex "grows up" and turns 21...of course, not the version the movie used...
What's the answer? Anyone else?

Re: It was Home I was looking for, and it was Home I found
Fri, July 30, 2004 - 12:19 PMAt the beginning of the novel, according to Burgess's foreword, Alex is roughly 15. Which makes the story that much more powerful in my opinion. -

Re: It was Home I was looking for, and it was Home I found
Fri, July 30, 2004 - 12:35 PMYou are correct, in the novel he is 15. Also, the Nadsat language had a lot of Gypsy speak as well as the above mentioned.
Now, for a tougher one from the book:
How old are the 2 girls he takes home from the record store?
Can anyone stump me? -

Re: It was Home I was looking for, and it was Home I found
Fri, July 30, 2004 - 12:38 PMHe says they are something like two or three years behind him in school . . . making them 12 or 13, if memory serves.
Also . . . the word "devotchka" in russian means alternately "little girl" and "whore", depending on how it's used . . . another of Burgess's brilliant word plays in the book and also a clue as to the ages of all the kids in the book without arousing too much censorship suspicion. -

Re: It was Home I was looking for, and it was Home I found
Tue, September 21, 2004 - 3:41 PMWhen I read the book for the first time in college back in SF I had borrowed it from the school library and in the margins were written notes on Nadsat in Cyrillic. I thought taht was interesting...
Then I couldn't stop THINKING in Nadsat for like a month...
